The Science Behind The Biossance Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum

A hero product in The Best Version of You Box, learn more about the Biossance Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum, including how to get the best out of the serum and how copper peptides support the skin as Holly Daniels, Global Head of Education for Biossance, reveals all you need to know.

Our serum utilises four key ingredients - copper peptides, hyaluronic acid, squalane and polyglutamic acid - to deliver instant and long-term hydration, plus visible firming for bouncy, healthy and plump skin. Here’s what makes these ingredients so effective:

  • Hyaluronic Acid + Polyglutamic Acid: Known as hydrating humectants, they bind water to the skin, increasing the water content within cells. They also preserve the ability of other compounds to perform their best in skincare, like copper peptides.

  • Copper Peptides: The key ingredient for supporting collagen and elastin for bouncy skin. They also promote the production of hyaluronic acid for even more hydration.

  • Squalane: The ultimate emollient. Our proprietary vegan, cruelty-free, sugar-cane-derived squalane acts as a protective shield that locks in hydration and prevents moisture from evaporating or fading.

Spotlight on copper peptides:

What are copper peptides in skincare?

Copper peptides are a naturally occurring complex made within the human body during times of repair. As we age, our body produces fewer copper peptides, and our skin and hair cells spend less time in a state of continuous healing. They were first identified to help heal wounds and eventually made their way into the skin and hair care segment as a way to repair cells and fight signs of ageing.

What do copper peptides do for your skin?

Copper peptides in skincare make your skin plump and bouncy with visibly diminished fine lines. On a deeper level, they support the production of collagen and elastin and help repair damaged tissue resulting in tighter, bouncier skin with huge benefits to healthy ageing. Our natural collagen production decreases year by year as we age, leaving our skin cells less full which creates fine lines and wrinkles over time. Copper peptides help fill those skin cells back up with collagen for bouncy, healthy, youthful-looking skin.

How are copper peptides made?

While trace amounts can be made within the human body, copper peptides are often created in a laboratory setting to generate a higher concentration. At Biossance, our Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum is made by our very own in-house lab of scientists using a powerful combination of copper peptides and our innovative Rapid Plumping Complex which is a synergistic blend of three clinically-proven moisture-boosters: hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid and squalane.

Top tips for application:

Like most products, there are beneficial do’s and don’ts to boost performance or avoid unwanted effects. Here’s what you need to consider when using our Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum:

  • Do apply after cleansing the skin

  • Do moisturise skin after application of the serum to help lock in hydration

  • Do follow by applying sunscreen in your morning routine

  • Avoid using alpha hydroxy acids (aka AHAs) in the same routine, which can reduce the effect of copper peptides on the skin

  • Avoid using vitamin C or L-Ascorbic in the same routine as copper peptides, which can also reduce the effectiveness of copper peptides
