What Are Probiotics and How Do They Help the Skin?

You’ve probably heard of probiotics in skincare, but perhaps are unsure as to how they work and what it means for your skin. Here, Aurelia London’s Head of Brand and Product Expert Antonia Knox explains these fascinating ingredients and their best-selling Cell Revitalise Day Moisturiser, as found in The Menopause Box 2.0.

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria most commonly derived from lactose and are available in foods, supplements and of course skincare. “Pro” means “for” or “in favour of,” and “biotic” means “life”. Many are familiar with the benefits of probiotics; ingesting them in their day-to-day life. Probiotics can be used in a number of ways both externally and internally, and fundamentally are all about regulating natural balance. At Aurelia London we are using next-generation topical probiotic technology, making these ingredients widely accessible in skincare. Our probiotics are derived from bifida bacteria and fermented milk proteins, which we have found to deliver the utmost in benefits for the skin.

What are the benefits of probiotics in skincare?

There are two main ways in which probiotics are used in topical skincare. The first and more well-known being in relation to the balance of bacteria (similar to how this works in the gut) by targeting the microbiome and working primarily to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Probiotics in this context can help your microbiome to stay balanced, allowing the skin to better regulate sebum production, stay hydrated and even help to tackle free radicals (unstable molecules that can accelerate skin ageing).

The second, less common benefit of probiotics is their use at a deeper level than the microbiome. Using lysate (or non-live) forms of probiotics can not only offer soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits but can also target concerns relating to skin ageing. These forms of probiotics can be harnessed to balance the skin from within, working to aid the skin’s natural immune response and promote skin repair. This is the form we have used at Aurelia London.

Cell Revitalise Day Moisturiser

An award-winner and customer favourite, our Cell Revitalise Day Moisturiser is formulated with natural botanical extracts and actives alongside our powerful PROTIDA™ technology, which work in tandem to help repair, balance, hydrate, calm and plump the skin. Soothing aloe vera and shea butter form the base of this cream, delivering hydration, moisture and supreme softness at every application. Our probiotics also help to soothe inflamed, sensitive and dry skin while actively repairing damage caused by cellular inflammation, the root cause of so many skin concerns. We’ve also incorporated antioxidant-rich borage oil which helps to tackle dryness and inflammation.

Top tips for application

Our Cell Revitalise Day Moisturiser has a unique, whipped texture that melts into the skin upon application. A little goes a long way with this moisturiser so start with around a pea-sized amount for your first use and massage well with your fingertips. Although silicone-free, this cream still delivers a silky-soft feeling that primes the skin beautifully and won’t rub off or pill when used before SPF or makeup.

Make use of the beautiful blend of natural fragrances by inhaling the scent before applying to the skin. Our blend of plumeria, jasmine, tuberose and mandarin offers an uplifting yet gentle fragrance that enhances the experience, helping you to feel relaxed, content and confident.
