THE VITAMIN A REVIEWS - SHANI DARDEN RETINOL REFORM & TEXTURE REFORM

THE VITAMIN A REVIEWS - SHANI DARDEN RETINOL REFORM & TEXTURE REFORM

Product Name/Price/ML: Texture Reform- £80.00 for 30ml - £2.66 per ml.

What category does the product fall into?

(loosely) Mild/Beginner

Who is it for? Suggested skin type and age?

All skins, even sensitive.

What form of vitamin A is in the product?

I.e. Retinol, retinoate, retinyl palmitate etc Retinyl palmitate

What %?

Not specified, but the notes say that Texture Reform is 20% more gentle than Retinol Reform which would bring it in at 1% of retinyl palmitate, which is milder than retinol anyway..but that is unconfirmed.

Ingredients:

Aqua (Water, Eau), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Lactic Acid, Rentinyl Palmitate, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Isohexadecane, Polysorbate 60, Potassium Hydroxide, Propylene Glycol, Glycereth 26, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Phenethyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Sodium PCA, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Fruit Extract, Beta-Glucan, Hydrolyzed Soybean Palmitate, Acetyl Glucosamine, Niacinamide

CF Status?

Cruelty-free.

What is the delivery system?

‘Proprietary’

How is it stabilised/buffered?

No information available.

How would you use it?

What the brand say: Start with one night a week and build up slowly, adding one additional night each week. What I suggest (if different): This is milder than the Retinol Reform, if you have used retinols before you should be fine 2 x a week

Where in your routine?

After cleansing, PM. You can follow with a moisturiser if you need more hydration. You don't need another acid with this one.

Potential risk for redness/irritation – out of 5.

2. It would score a 1 but for the inclusion of lactic acid at quite a high level, which despite the sensitive claims, could still cause a really sensitive skin a little aggro.

Texture Reform is available from Shani Darden and Cult Beauty.co.uk

Product Name/Price/ML: Retinol Reform- $95.00 for 30ml - $3.16 per ml. What category does the product fall into? (loosely) Intermediate Who is it for? Suggested skin type and age? Personally, I would say slightly more mature skins, experienced retinol users, or potentially acne sufferers. I wouldn’t recommend this as a starter retinol – try the Texture Reform for that. What form of vitamin A is in the product? I.e. Retinol, retinoate, retinyl palmitate etc Vitamin A propionate - see below What %? 5% retinol propionate and 5% lactic acid Ingredients: (As sent by the brand): Deionized Water, Retinol, Aloe Vera, Lactic Acid, Glycerth-26, Octyl Dimethyl, Polysorbate-80, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lactate, Sodium PCA, Niacinimide, Sodium Benzoate, Inositrol, Quaternium-15 The above list was sent to me by the brand. The below picture is the actual inci list as shown on the bottle: Note the disparity between the lactic acid listing and the detailed description of the retinol ingredient - it was sent to me as '5% retinol'. Not 5% retinol propionate - something altogether different. The problem with this is that it described to me in writing as 'retinol' and says the same thing on the website (here), but retinol propionate is full conversions away from retinol and not nearly as effective. It's not a bad ingredient at all, but it's like ordering an espresso and receiving a cappuccino. It takes longer to do what you need. It's not the same thing.. The upside of this is that I am interrupting reviews to do a post clarifying the stages of conversion. CF Status? Cruelty-free. What is the delivery system? ‘Proprietary’ How is it stabilised/buffered? Stabilised with tocopherol, no information on buffering. How would you use it? What the brand say: Start with one night a week and build up slowly, adding one additional night each week. What I suggest (if different): Solid advice. Where in your routine? After cleansing, PM only. You may want to buffer this one with a moisturiser after using it. Give it a good 20 minutes/half an hour to settle though. Do not use this the same time as acids. Potential risk for redness/irritation – out of 5. 4. I found this too strong for my skin when I first tried it, it would be better now that I’ve been using prescription strength for a good while, but don’t jump in with this one. I genuinely don’t think it’s suitable for beginners, hence the Texture Reform.
