This gentle acid toner works hard to deliver the power of exfoliation, without the irritation.

Powered by a blend of alpha-hydroxy and polyhydroxy acids (AHAs and PHA) and skin-conditioning ingredients, this next-generation exfoliating toner provides a comfortable exfoliation experience without compromising on results. This sophisticated formula visibly evens skin tone, reduces hyperpigmentation, minimises the appearance of visible pores and refines skin texture, all whilst respecting your skin barrier. Skin-soothing and hydration-boosting actives work in harmony with the acids to moisturise the skin, altogether revealing a hydrated, smooth and radiant complexion with minimal irritation.

This product contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and, particularly, the possibility of sunburn. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards. Use only as directed. If irritation persists, discontinue use.

 

Key ingredients

Mandelic acid - An AHA that specifically targets hyperpigmentation, helping to achieve even, glowing and more radiant skin.

Lactic acid - A skin-conditioning AHA that visibly smooths the skin, minimising the appearance of fine lines and visible pores whilst boosting hydration.

Gluconolactone - Known to be a gentle alternative to AHAs, this PHA helps to delicately exfoliate the skin whilst increasing hydration and offering antioxidant protection.

Caja, mango and banana extracts - A combination of extracts naturally rich in AHAs that work together to gently buff away old skin cells on the outermost layer of the skin.

Panthenol and glycerin - Skin-soothing ingredients that complement the acid’s exfoliating action and help to prevent irritation.

How it works

Mandelic acid helps to inhibit the expression of tyrosinase – the enzyme that contributes to hyperpigmentation – working with lactic acid and gluconolactone to gently buff away old cells at the surface of the skin. Skin-soothing and hydration-boosting actives ensure skin is simultaneously conditioned and well-hydrated to achieve gentle exfoliation.

How to use

Use in either the AM or PM, up to 3 times a week. After cleansing, dampen a cotton pad with the toner and sweep over a clean, dry face. Avoid the eye area. Follow with the rest of your routine and use sun protection during the day.

What percentage of AHA and PHA is in The Gentle Acid?

The Gentle Acid contains 9% AHA (5% mandelic and 4% lactic acid) and 1% PHA (gluconolactone).

What is the difference between The Gentle Acid and The Control Acid?

The Gentle Acid is our AHA + PHA Exfoliating Acid Toner, which is suitable for all skin types. The Control Acid is our 2% Salicylic Acid + Polylysine Exfoliating Acid Toner that has been specifically developed for oily, congested and/or breakout-prone skin.

What are AHAs and PHAs?

Short for alpha-hydroxy acid, AHAs are types of water-soluble exfoliating acids that help to exfoliate the surface of the skin, leaving a glowing and more even complexion. Glycolic acid is a very popular AHA in skincare, however, it can be irritating for some skins and is the only AHA proven to increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Therefore, we chose to use alternative AHAs that are kinder to the skin yet still pack a punch – mandelic and lactic acids.

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are water-soluble exfoliating acids with similar benefits to AHAs. PHAs are known to be gentler alternatives to AHAs due to their larger molecule size and are often recommended for sensitive skins.

Is The Gentle Acid suitable for all skin types and for sensitive skins?

Yes, The Gentle Acid is suitable for all skin types. It has been specifically formulated to benefit those with dull, uneven skin. The Gentle Acid has been formulated to use variants of AHAs/PHA shown to have good compatibility with a wide range of skin types and tones. Whilst The Gentle Acid should be okay to use if you are prone to sensitivity, we would always recommend to patch test before first use and to discontinue use if there are any signs of irritation. You should not be using acid products on any areas of skin that are actively sensitised or if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients used.

Can I use The Gentle Acid if I have a darker skin tone?

Yes, during development and our clinical and consumer trials, we always ensure that our testing panels are fully inclusive, representing all skin tones. Both mandelic and lactic acid were also included in the formula because of their known compatibility with all skin tones and types.
