How do retinoids target hyperpigmentation?

Tyrosinase is an enzyme responsible for the production of melanin, which contributes to pigmentation within the skin. Targeting hyperpigmentation at its root, retinoids are well-known tyrosinase inhibitors that help to stop tyrosinase from working and prevent pigmentation production. They also increase your skin cell turnover (the rate at which new skin cells are generated), which helps to fade the appearance of hyperpigmentation on the skin.

Which retinoid is best for targeting hyperpigmentation?

All retinoids will help to target hyperpigmentation, but it is best to opt for retinoid products that are also formulated with soothing and conditioning ingredients such as squalane, bakuchiol and vitamin E. This is because irritation can potentially lead to inflammation, which can actually cause hyperpigmentation to worsen, so it is always important to ensure you are using a retinoid at the right strength for you.  Products formulated with retinoids that are highly effective but with a low irritation potential are best; ingredients to look out for include hydroxypinacolone retinoate (HPR) and retinal, which are both more effective than retinol and have been shown to be less irritating. If you are unsure about which retinoid product you need, below is a catalogue of nourishing yet effective formulas we recommend for different levels of experience:
