The Science Behind NIOD’s Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist

A key product in The Menopause Box 2.0, we asked NIOD to explain exactly how the ingredients in this intelligent mist work to protect and support the skin.

This product is a dermal treatment mist — not to be mistaken for a "toner" — that hydrates the skin while also helping to protect against environmental stressors and water loss, both of which, over time, may result in a loss of visible skin quality, such as thinning and dryness.

A key product in The Menopause Box 2.0, we asked NIOD to explain exactly how the ingredients in this intelligent mist work to protect and support the skin.

What is the Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2)?

A dermal treatment mist — not to be mistaken for a "toner" — that hydrates the skin while also helping to protect against environmental stressors and water loss, both of which, over time, may result in a loss of visible skin quality, such as thinning and dryness.

What is the science behind it?

  • Yeast-Derived Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) - Our bodies naturally produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), highly reactive molecules that can lead to damage within the skin over time. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is another molecule naturally present in the body, generated as a way of out-competing the ongoing and potentially damaging effects of these molecules. Topical, solubilised forms of SOD remain on the surface layer of the skin to protect the skin from environmental stressors (such as pollution and UV exposure).

  • Marine Exopolysaccharides - Derived entirely through fermentation processes, this sustainably-sourced marine polysaccharide aims to help minimises water loss within the skin. This is due to its molecular structure which makes it able to attract and hold onto water.

How does it benefit the skin?

Oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors, such as pollution and dehydration may contribute to loss of skin quality over time. This can be particularly relevant to those experiencing menopause, as the changes during this time can have a resulting impact on the appearance of the skin. As an example, changes in hormone levels have been connected to changes in the skin's water and collagen content, which in turn can lead to an increased appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and dryness. Simultaneously, exposure to external factors over time - such as UV exposure or pollution - can exacerbate oxidative stress and other aggressors that lead to damage of the skin's barrier, alongside visible signs of ageing.

The Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist (SDSM2) can offer support against these external factors through the inclusion of the powerful antioxidants explained above to help combat skin dryness, whilst also providing a cooling sensation.

How to use it?

This product may be applied deliberately to the face and neck, in the morning and evening, after cleansing and before application of other treatments. It may also be used on the body if desired.
