Do you cut or highlight your own hair? Do your own gel nails or pedicures? Thread or laminate your own brows? I bet the answer is no. Many people think nothing of routinely paying professionals for services way less critical than treating the biggest organ in our body, and yet often quibble about regularly seeing facialists.
For too long they have been the unsung heroes when it comes to transforming the skin of millions of customers: quietly, expertly, and without fanfare. That’s changing with Skin Rocks Pro, and I have no intention of keeping this incredible movement quiet, or failing to call out brands who suggest their products will ever ‘replace’ the skill and outcomes of skincare industry professionals.
Prioritise the Professional
All too often, professional skincare treatments are viewed as an occasional ‘treat’ to top up the regular skincare routines done at home. It should be the other way round. For the best skin possible, regular facials should be the priority and having formulations and devices you can support with at home reinforce and maintain that good work. You would never “break up” with your dentist just because you brush your teeth regularly and a brand happened to launch a fancy new electric toothbrush. There are things that only the pros can do, and your skin is a living, dynamic organ which deserves professional knowledge, hands and expertise to function at its best. Professional facialists have spent their entire careers understanding how skin works, how to identify problems and how to integrate time-honoured touch and techniques adapted for each face. You cannot replicate that in a product, no matter what a brand tells you.
No one understands what skin needs better than the facialists who spend their lives touching faces. They accumulate vast knowledge about how skin responds to touch, treatments, products and devices, and have extensive practical experience with skin and the unique needs of each individual client. This matters. Technique matters. Analysing your skin matters. In my early days of being a facialist I identified a client's skin cancer, something they would not have discovered early had they not had pro eyes on their skin.
More Than Skin Deep
Pro facialists will inspect and evaluate your skin. Consider your lifestyle, your age, your medical history, nutrition and stress levels. They’ll assess your environmental exposure, any tweakments you may have had, how active you are, any critical contraindications. All this helps them understand the multiple influences on your skin and how to adjust, modify or tailor a precise treatment plan. It is holistic, personalised, and preventive, not just cosmetic. It combines observation, questioning, and technology to create a plan that’s safe, effective, and specifically tailored to you. You would never get an outcome that comes close to this level of nuance and knowledge with an off-the-shelf DIY device or skincare product.
Furthermore, it’s not only the physical or visible outcomes that are important here. What this infuriating new marketing ‘angle’ misses is the crucial element of escapism and the emotional unburdening that happens between client and therapist. Stress is written into our skin, and using home devices with questionable techniques (however good we think we are at using them), in non-sterile environments, or with fiddly equipment that needs charging, cleaning, or switching up mid treatment completely disrupts the flow, relaxation and mental decompression that happens in the treatment room. Treatments are often combined with signature deep tissue and lymphatic massage techniques: an integral part of therapeutic connection that can transform skin quality and dramatically reduce client stress. Therapists follow both your skin and their instincts: something just as valuable as their scientific know-how.
You can never replicate this at home. There’s just not that level of intuition and expertise driving the treatment. Trust me — the intersection of scientific knowledge and professional touch is exactly where the magic happens.
