Skin Biohacking – What It Is and How It Works

‘Biohacking’ may have become the buzzword of the skincare world, but what does it mean and should we be doing it? In this article, we explore how working with your skin’s natural biology can stimulate regeneration and maximise skin strength and vitality.

What is Biohacking?

Biohacking is optimising skin health from the inside out; focusing on long-term cellular regeneration and using data, biology, and targeted treatments to improve cellular repair and create long-term skin health and resilience. 

What Does Biohacking Mean for Skin?

At its core, biohacking is about making smart, intentional tweaks to optimise how something functions. When applied to skin, it means understanding how your skin behaves — how it repairs, communicates and responds to stress — and how to support those processes properly.

Encouraging efficient cell turnover, strengthening the barrier, maintaining balanced hydration, defending against environmental stressors and building long-term resilience is all part of this so it’s not a temporary fix to look better, it’s achieving skin that functions better overall.

Ingredient 'Biohackers'

Skin biohacking is rooted in the premise that specific skincare ingredients can promote skin longevity and boost natural processes. There are myriad brands that have this mission at their core, even if they don’t reference the words ‘biohacking’ or skin 'longevity'. Targeted ingredients are at the heart of this, many of which we have heard of or already use in our regular routines:

  1. Retinoids — encourage efficient cell turnover and support collagen production to improve tone and texture over time.
  2. Peptides — act as messengers, helping signal repair pathways and supporting firmness.
