Ingredient Spotlight: Phytic and Shikimic Acids

Used in Skin Rocks' strongest Exfolitone™ acid The Strong Acid, phytic and shikimic acids are some of the latest buzzwords to hit the skincare world. Keep reading to learn more about these plant-derived AHAs and what they do for the skin.

What are phytic and shikimic acids?

Both phytic and shikimic acids are plant-derived AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids). They are mild exfoliating acids, meaning they gently resurface the skin, with studies showing high efficacy despite their gentle mode of action. They’re included in The Strong Acid to help support the exfoliating action of the blend of acids used in the formula.

What are the benefits of phytic acid?

Phytic acid is a multifunctional ingredient in that it is an AHA by nature, but it also has humectant properties, meaning that it can help to increase hydration in the skin. Phytic acid also has antioxidant and calming properties, meaning that it can also help to protect the skin from environmental damage and soothe the skin.

What are the benefits of shikimic acid?

Shikimic acid, like phytic acid, is a multifunctional ingredient with antioxidant and calming properties. It is also a tyrosinase inhibitor, meaning that it helps to prevent the production of melanin, which is responsible for hyperpigmentation in the skin. Therefore, shikimic acid can also help to reduce skin discolouration.

How do these acids compare to other AHAs?

Both phytic and shikimic acids are mild exfoliants, and so they are best used as additional ingredients to help support the exfoliating action of other AHAs such as glycolic or mandelic acids. However, thanks to the additional benefits of phytic and shikimic acids, they can help to address multiple signs of ageing on the skin, and are therefore highly effective ingredients when included as part of a well-rounded formula.
